M/s Krishna Industries, Mumbai is engaged in the fabrication of
stainless steel milk cans and other related items used for milk
distribution, like can plunger, milk funnel with strainer, bottle
stand, sampler, milk collection tray, measuring vessels.
The company chose stainless steel for fabricating milk cans because
of the material's higher strength-to-weight ratio and its resistance
to mechanical deformation, abrasion; since SS is corrosion-resistant,it
needs no protective coating. The milk can is specially fabricated
to impart crack resistance.
The mirror polished interiors of the stainless steel milk cans are
easy to clean, are free of surface pits and scratches. According
to the company, special fabrication technique of the stainless steel
milk cans ensure long operational durability, long life with low
maintenance costs. They are also easy to handle and easily pass
through the washer & conveyor system.
Stainless steel has a low thermal conductivity and this helps the
milk can to keep the milk cool, thus preserving the milk quality
for a long period.
According to the company, stainless steel milk cans performed well
at the tests conducted at the Indian Institute of Packaging, Mumbai.
The company is also producing stainless steel floor tiles. Its sister
concern M/s Krishna Impex fabricates stainless steel kitchen utensils.

Metal Research Centre
Metal Research Centre (MRC), Delhi is an R & D organization
in the field of metals engineering.
The organization's services to the stainless steel industry
are:
(i) developed "Moldcot - R", a reactive mould coating for small-sized
stainless steel ingots; this has resulted in elimination of
grinding of ingots prior to rolling, resulting in a metal savings
of 3 to 5 %.
(ii) developed, for the first time, a unique refining system
for induction melting of stainless steel resulting in refining
through creation of bubbles (CO - CO2 ) in the otherwise still-bath
of induction furnace melting; the stainless steel thus produced
has relatively low inclusion contents and residual gases.
(iii) for pickling of stainless steel sheets, a product "PICKALSAFE"
has been developed which has resulted in metal savings of 2
to 3 % during pickling.
(iv) prepared useful technical monographs / information bulletin
for stainless steel producers. MRC can offer useful consultancy
services to stainless steel-making units; some of the technical
reports are: A Treatise on - Designing of Metastable Compositions
in Manganese Austenitic Stainless Steels; Some New Grades of
Manganese Stainless Steel; Recent Technological Development
of Austenitic Manganese Steels for Non-magnetic Structural Applications;
