'Golden' Pillar

At the newly-built Surabi International hotel in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, five pillars have been clad in stainless steel. In what may be the first such instance in India, the central pillar has been clad in gold-coloured stainless steel in No. 8 finish. The other four pillars have been clad in No. 4 finish, chromium colour. The diameter of the pillars is 300 mm and measure 6 metres in height.

The stainless steel fabrication work was executed by M/s Sreevatsa Stainless Steel Fabricators (P) Ltd, Chennai.

The gold-coloured stainless steel sheets,supplied with double coating of OPC (one-side plastic coating which is removed after the fabrication work is completed), were procured from Thailand.Ê About 300 kg of stainless steel sheets of one mm thickness were used for cladding the five pillars.

The owner of the hotel had initially decided on using aluminium composite panels, but was later convinced by the fabricators to use gold-coated stainless steel sheets, in spite of the higher price.

The thickness of strips ranges from 3.00 to 0.08 mm. Tolerances for thickness and width will be according to ASTM in 2D / 2B (on request) finish.

The internal diameter of the coil will be in 500 or 250 mm dia. Inspection and packing will be as per ASTM or according to customer's requirement.

M/s Prakash Steelage Ltd produces stainless steel welded and seamless tubes & pipes. The plant is located at Slvassa in the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli. Welded tubes are produced in 0.5" NB & OD to 600 NB & OD; thickness is as per SCH.5, SCH.10, SCH.40, SCH.80 etc. Seamless tubes are produced under 0.25" NB & OD to 8" NB & OD. The grades of tubes produced are AISI 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321 etc. The company has five tube mills, four hydraulic presses, TIG welding machine and other necessary equipment like air compressor, roller hearth furnace, beed polishing & rolling machine, tube straightening machine, draw benches etc. The company has in house physical and chemical laboratories with testing facilities.

The company's products are supplied to about various sugar mills spread over the country. In addition, M/s Prakash Steelage Ltd has supplied stainless steel pipes for M/s Thermax Ltd for the latterÕs Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) project and several other important projects.
